Thursday Night Preview-September 17

17 September 2015

Up and coming greyhounds will take centre stage at Albion Park on Thursday night, with the running of three heats of the Racing Queensland Young Guns (520m).

The first heat, Race 5, sees Peter Ruetschi’s Sheza Keen Size tackle Thursday night winner Norm The Storm (Mathew Reid), who sizzled around the Brisbane circuit recently clocking 29.77. Renouf’s Magic (Elaine Klaassen) is also not without a hope having produced an impressive come from behind victory two starts ago. Sid Goodwin’s Master Corsair steps up to the 520m for the first time having run a slick 22.59 over the short course last time out and could be in the mix.

The second heat, Race 6, looks to be all about last week’s Publican’s Cup victor, Simpatico. Glenn Smith’s charge is looking for her 11th consecutive victory, and having clocked 29.79 and 29.98 recently, she is sure to be hard to beat. Cash In Motion (Robert Cooke) and For Luck (Michael Boody) have both recorded sub-30 second runs at Albion Park and will be looking to upset the favourite.

The final heat, Race 7, appears to be much more open, with several of the greyhounds having won at Albion Park in their last few starts. Aristotle (Mathew Reid), Ima Cowboy (Ray Burman), With A Gee (Sylvia Hawkings), Serene Star (Margaret Quarrell) and Knocker (Peter Ruetschi) have all put their noses in front in recent weeks, and as a result, the race is sure to be keenly contested.

The top two placegetters from each heat, as well as the fastest two third placegetters will progress to the $15,200 final next Thursday night.

The other feature of the night is the final of the annual Lightning series (331m) with a field of 8 assembled having qualified through the heats last Sunday. Zabaleta (Samuel Dart) was the fastest qualifier, running 18.74, just .02 outside the record held by Miner’s Moss set in this series last year. She will face a stiff test however, being drawn in box 6. Wazza King, ran fractionally slower time on Sunday (18.78) but would appear to be drawn more favourably in Box 2. All 8 greyhounds have tremendous short course ability and much will depend on the charge to the first bend when the lids open for Race 4 at 7:41pm.
