Group 1 Melbourne Cup winner Dyna Double One headlines six heats of the Sky Racing Brisbane Cup at Group 1 level this Thursday night at Albion Park.
The Andrea Dailly trained son of Barcia Bale and Crystin Bale powered home to defeat champion kennelmate Fernando Bale in the shadows of the post last Friday night at Sandown Park. He returns to Brisbane to improve upon his 2nd to Fabulous Storm in July’s Group 1 Garrard’s Winter Cup after setting a new track record of 29.51 seconds in his heat the previous week.
He lines up in the final heat from Box 3, taking on Fantastic Sid for Jason Fletcher, Ipswich Cup heat winner Sheza Keen Size for Peter Ruetschi and veteran group performer Frosty Jay Jay (Renald Attard)
Grand Sydney campaigner Bessy Boo (Alan Proctor) will line up for his 102nd start from Box 5 in Heat 4, taking on the most inexperienced greyhound in the heats, Jeff Crawford’s Reshuffle. Having only her 2nd career start Monday night, she ran a scintillating 29.81 which would see her competitive if she can reproduce that effort from Box 4 despite the massive class rise. It shapes to be quite a hotly contested affair with recent Group 3 City of Ipswich Gold Cup winner Cash In Motion in Box 3 and Melbourne Cup Final reserve Sacramento Sal (Jessica Sharp) making the trip up from Melbourne to start from Box 2.
Group 1 winner Flash Reality has returned in fine fettle, and takes his place from Box 8 in the third heat after two impressive displays over the 431m at Ipswich culminating in his track record run of 24.59 on Saturday night. Tony Brett’s charge heads to headquarters hoping to reclaim the form that saw him take out the 2014 Garrard’s Winter Cup. Tony says he believes the dog will be right on song for Thursday night.
“He’s pulled up good afterwards which is lovely.” Brett said.
“He should be good this week and if he can get through next week he should be fully wound up for the final.”
He takes on former boom youngster Frattini (Patrick Lavis) and Inspector Cloud (Gavin Lowe), an impressive 29.85 winner at Albion Park last month.
Jason Fletcher’s Group 1 Dapto Megastar winner Fantastic Spiral looks to be the class dog in heat 2, although he is sure to face stiff competition from Patrick Lavis’s Mincin’ Machine and Tony Apap’s Pikelet, both of whom can produce fast runs on their day. Also in good form are Sandra Hunt’s Main Story and Stephen Rolph’s Anti Dentite who could surprise if the fancied runners find trouble.
Heats one and five appear to be quite open affairs with a multitude of chances in each event. The first sees up and comers Simpatico (Glenn Smith) and Chatsworthy (Sandra Hunt) take on Victorian visitor Tear Away Size (Stephen Whyte) and veteran top class campaigners Hougenie (Peter Ruetschi) and Elusive Desire (Colin Graham)
The fifth heat is arguably the toughest and full of group performers with Group 3 Gold Coast Cup winner Norm The Storm (Mathew Reid) opposing Ipswich Cup runner up Macnivek (Kevin Ellis) and 2014 Darwin Cup winner Clash Of Kings (Stephen Whyte). Also featured in the event is Frank Hancock’s consistent top grade performer Lady Abigail and Sydney visitor Old Spice (Terry Priest).
The 10 race card Thursday night kicks off at 6:43pm with the Group 1 Sky Racing Brisbane Cup heats races 3-8 on the program.
