Victorian superstar Dyna Double One justified favouritism with a scintillating win in the Group 1 Sky Racing Brisbane Cup Thursday night at Albion Park.
The Andrea Dailly trained sprinter made it two group 1 wins in just three starts with his 29.71 victory, adding to his impressive Melbourne Cup win just two weeks ago, when he defeated champion, and kennelmate Fernando Bale.
Despite the awkward draw in box four, from which he had never won in four previous attempts, punters sent him around a dominant $1.65 favourite after a 29.53 heat win which saw him run just .02 of a second outside his own track record.
It was nervous moments for favourite backers as he wasn’t brilliantly away, but he quickly mustered through to sit just off early leaders Old Spice and Fantastic Spiral who were jostling for the front after a sizzling early sectional of 5.47.
Sandra Hunt’s Chatsworthy, starting from box 1, coursed wide on the first bend as expected, putting paid to the chances of those behind, including well fancied Flash Reality.
Dyna Double One loomed alongside the leading pairing approaching the 600m boxes, and at that point he had the race in his keeping, powering away from his rivals with his trademark strength to score by four and a quarter lengths, defeating outsider Cyndie’s Magic ($27.60) for local trainer Bill Elson with NSW chaser Fantastic Spiral ($11.60) a further head back in third.
The win takes his career record to 24 wins in 43 starts with his earnings moving to just a touch over $800,000, placing him third on the all-time AGRA stake money list behind million dollar earners Fernando Bale and Sweet It Is.
The next mission for Dyna Double One will be the Group 1 Hobart Thousand (461m), with the heats to be run next Thursday night in the Tasmanian capital.
