Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club - Key Staff Appointments

The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club today announced three new staff appointments as it further expands its operations in the Brisbane metropolitan area. The Club now races four times per week, from Monday to Thursday, at the Albion Park Raceway.

Mr Anthony Millican has been appointed as the Manager of the newly created Marketing and Business Development Department. Mr Millican joins the Club with experience in and a passion for racing, combined with significant experience in public relations, marketing and events management. Most recently Mr Millican has assumed the role of Account and Events Director of one of the Gold Coast's leading public relations and events firms. Mr Millican holds a Bachelor of Communications majoring in Public Relations and Journalism.

Ms Melinda Berry has been appointed to the Marketing and Business Development Department in the position of Sponsorship and Public Relations Officer. Ms Berry joins the club with considerable local and international experience in sports events management and marketing. Most recently, Ms Berry has assumed the role of Program Manager for Touch Scotland in the United Kingdom. Ms Berry holds a Bachelor of Science (Sport and Recreation Management) and a Diploma of Recreation Sports Coaching.

Mr Jason Irwin has joined the Club in the role of Operations Supervisor, and will be responsible for the day to day management of operational racing issues at the Club. Most recently, Mr Irwin was the track curator at the Gold Coast Greyhound Racing Club prior to its closure. He brings an extensive background in greyhound racing to the Club and will be a valuable asset in ensuring the smooth operation of our busy racing schedule.

The three new positions have been funded through savings achieved through economies of scale from racing four times per week and from operational efficiencies achieved in the relocation of operations out of the Russ Hinze Stand.

Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club General Manager, Luke Gatehouse, in announcing the appointments, said “This is a clear statement by the Brisbane Club that we are committed to the growth of metropolitan greyhound racing in Queensland, and we are now in the position to actively pursue growth opportunities for our business.”

Treasurer
The Honourable Andrew Fraser
Wednesday, July 16, 2008
$10 million compensation for Greyhounds.

The Bligh government has set aside $10 million to assist Greyhounds Queensland Limited move out of the soon to be redeveloped Gold Coast Parklands site.

Treasurer and Racing Minister Andrew Fraser said the public land, which had been leased by several organisations including the Gold Coast Greyhound Racing Club for several years, was now required for the much-needed Gold Coast University Hospital.

“The Gold Coast Parklands have always been managed by Parklands Gold Coast Trust and owned by the taxpayer. However for many years different types of organisations on different tenures have operated out of this site.

“It is essential we utilise this land to improve and expand health services for the growing Gold Coast community.

“Today I can confirm that we will provide $10 million to assist Greyhounds Queensland Limited move from its Gold Coast home.

“The Greyhounds presently pay $130,000 a year in a leasehold arrangement. The compensation offered recognises the need to assist the industry and represents a generous settlement.

“The Parklands Gold Coast complex comprises 38 hectares and is valued at $25 million. The portion of land that is being taken for the construction of the Gold Coast University Hospital comprises 24% of the site and is worth $6 million.’’

Mr Fraser said he had met with the Greyhounds Queensland Limited last Friday, July 11, to discuss the compensation and possible alternative sites.

“There has been debate for some time over the future facilities for greyhound racing in the region.

“I know trainers and breeders have been debating the industry’s future in south east Queensland and this announcement will help industry move forward,’’ he said.

Mr Fraser said the focus now needed to be on the long term future of the industry.

“The compensation payment will be conditional on the industry applying the funds to new facilities. Where they might be and in what form is a matter for them.

“This funding provides the means for the industry to marshal its resources and plan for the long term future. Industry leaders need to put forward the best plan for the industry as a whole.

Mr Fraser said the Bligh government had no policy objection to the possibility of Greyhounds Queensland Ltd exiting their part ownership of Albion Park in Brisbane and seeking to combine the industry’s resources at a new site.

“If they wish to, we would be happy to help them enter into a proposal with their co-tenants Queensland Harness Ltd to exit Albion Park,’’ he said.

“While Logan has been mooted a possible alternative site for a ‘’super track’’, this is something for the industry to decide.

“The Bligh government identified the northern site of Parklands Drive, Parkwood as the preferred location for the Gold Coast University Hospital. This land includes state owned land – which is occupied by the Parklands Gold Coast Trust.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF ALBION PARK RUSS HINZE STAND
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES UNDERWAY FOR PATRONS
Business As Usual for Harness Racing and Greyhound Meetings
____________________________________________________

Following preliminary engineering advice, Albion Park Raceway, Brisbane, has today announced temporary closure of the Russ Hinze Stand for precautionary reasons.

The stand was built nearly 30 years ago.

A report on building foundations and other issues relating to the stand has identified that a number of structural matters need to be addressed.

A spokesperson for Albion Park Raceway, said today disruption to Harness Racing and Greyhound meetings would be minimal, but the well known Silks Restaurant would be shut, pending further engineering investigations into the stand itself.

"As a result of the recent safety assessment, a decision has been made to initiate a temporary stand closure until further notice," the spokesperson said.

"There may be some disruption to the use of Albion Park over the next week and both the Harness Racing Industry and Greyhound Racing Industry are implementing their own measures to keep patrons informed.

"We will also be working with Management at Silks to see what can be done to assist them," he said.

 THURSDAY NIGHT ALBION PARK
MEETING ABANDONDED

As a result of consideration overnight of the issues with the Russ Hinze Stand, the GRA has decided to err on the side of caution to cancel the meeting to be held at Albion Park tonight. There is a remote chance that there could be an issue which would put the welfare of the race caller, lure driver, judge and cameraman into question and it has been decided that this chance cannot be taken.

I apologise to all greyhound participants who had greyhounds entered tonight and in particular to those participants who have travelled from interstate for the final of the Big Dog Queensland Cup. We will provide appropriate compensation to those interstate participants. A determination regarding prizemoney allocated for the Big Dog Queensland Cup will be made in the near future.

We are attempting to place the Friday twilight meeting to one of our other TAB venues and a decision will be made shortly. Anyone wishing to scratch their dogs from that transferred meeting will be able to do so without penalty. To compensate participants for any extra travel costs the unplaced prizemoney paid will be doubled to $20.00.

Again, I apologise for this late change but things have moved quickly and in such events, further consideration of events and a chance to consider the outcomes may well present a different decision.
